Trapesi: A Revolutionary Bistro Table by Phebos Xenakis

Golden A' Furniture Design Award Winner Combines Functionality and Aesthetics

Introducing Trapesi, a bistro table designed by Phebos Xenakis that solves a common problem faced by many in public places - where to put their bags. This innovative design, which won the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, integrates functionality with aesthetics, creating a unique and practical solution.

The inspiration for Trapesi came from a simple observation - people often struggle with where to place their bags when in a café or other public place. Xenakis took this challenge and turned it into an opportunity, creating a system that not only solves this problem but also enhances the design of the table itself. The system is integrated into the table, acting not as an extension but as a key design element.

Trapesi stands out from other bistro tables due to its unique properties. The legs are indirectly connected to the tabletop through a middle structure, giving the illusion that the tabletop is levitating. This design creates a more open feel to the table. The four folds at each corner of the table are the most important parts, offering both structural stability and functionality. These folds can be used as hooks to hang bags or as compartments for magazines or newspapers.

The table is composed of three main materials - solid oak wood for the legs and tabletop, and a polyurethane coating for the middle structure. This coating gives the design a sleek satin look while reducing sharp edges to prevent damage to bags. It also provides a warm and soft feel to the touch. The table's simple structure makes it easy to assemble and disassemble into three main pieces.

The design process for Trapesi began in January 2016 and concluded in June 2016. It was exhibited at the Howest college as part of the bachelor exhibition. The project faced several challenges, the most significant being the integration of a system with hooks without compromising the design. The solution was to place the hooks at an ergonomic position, serving not only as a design aspect but also as a structural and functional aspect. In the words of Xenakis, "form follows function."

Trapesi is a testament to Xenakis's innovative thinking and design prowess. It's a solution to a common problem, presented in a stylish and functional piece of furniture. As Xenakis notes, "When attending a public place/café it is a very common problem as where to put your bag/purse. This bistro table solves this problem with its four elegant folds forming a hook at each end."
